Choosing a photographer can be a risky endeavor. There are so many unknown factors in the process that can easily cause it to become overwhelming. Being well informed and well prepared prior to meeting with photographers can be invaluable assets.

 

1. Personal References
The most important factor in choosing a photographer is their personal references. Whether it is a recommendation from a friend or a personal testimony from the photographer’s list of references, these are the best help available for selecting the person who will be documenting the most important day of your life. If the photographer cannot provide references or refuses to, he or she may not be the right person for the job.

 

2. Personality
Personality is equally important when choosing a photographer. No matter how good the portfolio is, if he or she is difficult to work with, it could ruin the experience of planning and having a wedding. Make sure the person is easy to get along with and that there is good “chemistry” when meeting and discussing ideas. Make sure when meeting the photographer it is face-to-face and that he or she will be sole photographer for your event.

Look at the photographer’s portfolio. This is what shows if he or she is capable of capturing those memorable moments in such a way that you will want to revisit them for years to come. Note the photographer’s style and themes of the photos and decide whether it is appropriate for your wedding. The photographer’s experience is key in guaranteeing quality photos.

 

4. Style
Ask to see all the photos he or she shot from one wedding. Pay attention to what scenes, moments, and situations the photographer chooses to capture. Ask how your photos will be unique, or tailored to you. How will he or she photograph you and your loved ones in a way that is flattering and “play up” good angles?

 

5. Price
Regardless of budget, getting the most for the money is an important element in planning any wedding. Shop around and compare prices for different photography packages. Make sure you know exactly what you’re getting at what price. Ask what happens if the wedding goes over the scheduled time, and ask when he or she will be getting to the wedding and how long he or she will be there. Carefully review the contract, and make sure you know what everything means and that all agreements are in writing.
